"Why Are You Teaching My Child To Clap?" - The Impact of Phonological Awareness on Speech and Literacy

Phonological awareness is critical for learning to read any alphabetic writing system (Ehri, 2004; Rath, 201; Troia, 2004)

All too often, there is an emphasis on children to become good talkers and readers whilst not looking at how the foundation to these skills are developing.

This practical twilight course looks at the robust rationale behind focussing on phonological awareness skills and how these basics need to be incorporated into phonics programmes within early years.

This session will allow learners to investigate further the link between phonological processing and become skilled in identifying phonological weakness so that activities can be developed to support these areas.
