Makaton is extremely flexible as it can be personalised to an individual's needs and used at a level suitable for them. Some of the ways it can be used are:
The Core Vocabulary is the starting point for everyone learning Makaton. When anyone attends Makaton training, it is the Core Vocabulary signs and symbols that are taught and learned.
The Core Vocabulary was developed as a result of careful research. It has the signs and symbols needed for everyday communication. It is organised in Stages with early Stages containing signs and symbols for immediate needs like drink, eat and home. Later Stages contain vocabulary for more abstract concepts like time and emotions.
Once you have learned the Core Vocabulary, you can use other signs and symbols with it. There are over 11,000 extra Makaton symbols and signs in the Resource Vocabulary. This is organised in topics like food and drink.
Level 1 training provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme.
Sessions include discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work.
You will also learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2, and some of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.
You will learn the signs and symbols from Stages 3 and 4, and the rest of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.
Level 3 training helps you to improve and develop your signing and symbol skills and how to use them effectively every day.
You will revise the signs and symbols you learned in your Level 1 and 2 training, and learn the signs and symbols for Stages 5 and 6 of the Core Vocabulary.
Level 4 training completes the Core Vocabulary.
You will revise the signs and symbols you learned in your Level 1, 2 and 3 training, and learn the signs and symbols for Stages 7 and 8 of the Core Vocabulary.
Each level is made up of two modules and is currently delivered online in sessions of two four hour sessions, four two hour sessions or a full day of training face to face.
Makaton Signing for Babies is for parents, family members or carers who would like to sign with babies and children in their care and have no previous experience of Makaton. These sessions are designed for you and your child to have fun and learn together.
